Mentoring and Inclusion
JR Foundation’s aim is to support children who have been identified to require our support and help them realise their full potential through education and sport. These styles of mentoring are focused on building a successful relationship built on trust, which in turn, results in better communication. JR Foundation provides academic guidance, motivation and to support the young children, helping them stay focused and motivated throughout their time at school. The specific benefits include: Being encouraged and empowered in personal development. Being supported to identify and achieve near future goals. Being helped to identify and correct gaps in their generic skills and behaviour. Playing sports and activities together will enable an increase in self-confidence and also a stress relief, which will lead to a positive social interaction.
"We all have our part to play in opening the field of opportunity up to children and young people so they can realise their full potential. We are a non-profit organisation that connects children and young people with opportunities to transform their lives by providing training, events, life skills and mentors".
HOW does BTH WORK with THE JR FOUNDATION:
We use the JR Foundation to work with students on a 1-1 basis, developing their resilience and utilising sport as an effective tool to develop confidence, build trust and make positive change.
N-Gage is a Manchester-based charity that gives young people at risk of educational or social exclusion opportunities and skills to achieve their full potential.
Working in partnership with schools, Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council and other partners we provide highly successful, flexible and targeted approaches to anti-social behaviour and educational exclusion.
The charity was founded by Christie Spurling MBE in 2006 in response to his own experiences of educational exclusion.
He is a believer in being part of the solution and all the programmes he has set up for N-Gage try to look at young people as a whole person. If young people are causing problems in school, it is likely that they may also be creating challenges outside of school. He is committed to encouraging all young people to be an active and positive part of their community, in school and out.
N-Gage has a growing team of passionate staff and volunteers who combine creative skills and a commitment to young people with a range of projects and programmes across Greater Manchester.
"We believe that young people are valuable and incredible at bringing about change, so our mission is to help young people to reach their full potential in their community".
HOW does BTH WORK with Trafford N-Gage:
Trafford N-Gage do 1-1 and group mentoring sessions to support students mental health and well-being. It gives students the chance to speak to someone outside of their school environment, who they can trust and build a positive relationship with. N-Gage mentors will explore issues that students may be facing at home and in school and offer strategies and support to help them re-engage with their education.
FBB works with young people from areas of socio-economic disadvantage who are passionate about football but disengaged at school, to help them finish school with the skills and grades to make a successful transition into adulthood. We do this by providing long-term, intensive support, built around relationships and young people’s passions, in the classroom and beyond.
USING THE POWER OF FOOTBALL TO CHANGE THE LIVES OF YOUNG PEOPLE
HOW does BTH WORK with football beyond borders:
FBB offer BTH, Weekly 1:1 therapy sessions for our most 'at-risk' students, delivered by a BACP/UKCP qualified counsellor to provide a safe space for students to process their experiences.
linc
The LINC Social Skills Programme is run by Mrs Naughton and Mr O’Neill. Our aim is to help children understand how important it is to communicate their ideas and opinions appropriately, as well as accurately understand information received in contrasting social settings, and increase key skills in communication. We are all aware how important the development of social skills are; it can therefore often be beneficial to revisit areas to boost self-confidence and enhance positive social interactions.
Through group work, our aim is to help overcome obstacles and work more effectively, encouraging ‘pro-social behaviours’ with other young people.
We are dedicated to giving our students a high quality education and access to opportunities to help them grow socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Students continue to feel part of the BTH family, in an environment where they feel safe, when a mainstream classroom may appear overwhelming. Where deemed necessary, students are provided with opportunities to work on their confidence, self-esteem and social skills through interventions led by members of the Pastoral team.
Educational Provision
Each child that attends the Ark does so for a different reason. We work with each student to support them in the most effective way possible.
Students access an appropriate curriculum whilst in the Ark, ensuring they keep up to date with content missed in the classroom. Subject teachers provide classwork for students to complete, which is marked and feedback provided. All students in the Ark have access to a laptop where they can Teams into their lessons and have access to a variety of online learning platforms, such as ‘Sparx Maths’, ‘Seneca’, ‘Tassomai’, ‘Everlearner and ‘LanguageNut’.
Reintegration
The Ark offers a reintegration bridging process for students who present with school-based anxiety, long-term medical conditions or any other factor which may result in long-term absence or refusal. We aim to reintegrate students back into mainstream lessons within 8 weeks. This can vary depending on the individual child and the level of their needs.
On occasions where a child is deemed to be a school refuser or has been unable to attend school for prolonged periods of time, The Ark is offered as part of a reintegration process designed to provide structure for a student without overwhelming them. The intent is to gradually increase time spent in school before moving towards full reintegration, whilst continuing to offer support and build on trusted relationships with college staff.
Referral Process
It is essential that all students suitable for working in the Ark are referred through the appropriate channels. We follow a staged approach which means Heads of Year, SENCo, members of Senior Leadership or Pastoral teams can all refer into the Wellbeing Panel. Panel is held every week and look at the current circumstances and existing support before jointly deciding on next steps. This includes any referrals into the Ark. We aim to have no more than 5 students in the Ark at any time, this helps to ensure the Ark remains a nurturing environment fit for its purpose.
Progress for each student will be monitored and reviewed every 4-6 weeks, or termly depending on the reason for attending the Ark. Discussions between relevant members of staff will take place regularly, we will then decide whether the student needs to continue accessing The Ark and adapt the provision accordingly. Every child will complete an adapted questionnaire when they start accessing learning through the Ark and again when the exit back into fulltime classroom learning; allowing us to measure impact.
